Fire Safety at Home

If you haven’t already this year, be sure to test and change your smoke alarm batteries or install them if you don’t have them, check your fire extinguishers (remind yourself where you keep them) and review safety procedures in your home and office. Here’s some information from the Do It Best website that you may find useful and if you have any questions about any of the items mentioned, ask one of our friendly sales associates for help.

A fire extinguisher can save the lives of your loved ones and protect your home, too. Choosing the right extinguisher can be tricky, so remember to look for one that is multi-hazard with an ABC-rating. When extinguishing a fire remember to stand at least six to seven feet away and follow the PASS principle: Pull pin, Aim low, Squeeze handle, and Sweep side to side.

Smoke alarms will give your family valuable time to escape. Every home needs at least one smoke alarm on each floor and in stairways leading to the bedrooms and the basement. You may want to consider replacing your existing hard-wire alarms with combination smoke and carbon monoxide alarms as well.

A step-by-step plan of escape that’s mapped out and rehearsed ahead of time will ease confusion in a panic-stricken situation. The easiest way to start is to draw a floor plan of your home with all the possible exits highlighted. For second story windows, an escape ladder will increase your options for a safe exit. Have a designated meeting area outside the home where all will gather.

Once everyone is safely out of the house, go to the nearest neighbor’s phone and call 9-1-1! Do not re-enter the dwelling for any reason until the fire department has determined it is safe to do so.

Is Your Toilet Running Continuously?

When water continuously flows into the toilet bowl, this can waste a lot of water, costing the homeowner a lot of money, especially if you have a city water meter, so it should be fixed as soon as possible.

One of the causes may be a damaged float ball or float rod. When the tank re-fills, the float ball is supposed to rise with the water level and shut off the water at a certain point. But, if the float ball or float rod aren’t working correctly, they won’t shut off the water like they should. If this is the case, you simply need to replace the damaged part. It’s easy to do, just turn off the water supply and flush the toilet to empty the tank. Remove the old float ball and/or rod by unscrewing counterclockwise. Screw on the new part and turn on the water supply. If the water supply is too high, it can be adjusted by bending the float rod down, or if the water supply is too low, bend the float rod up.

A problem with the toilets tank ball or flapper is another common cause for a running toilet. Once the toilet has been flushed the tank ball or flapper is supposed to drop down and close off the tank from the bowl. But, there are two things that may prevent that from happening. One, the tank ball, or flapper may be worn or damaged, preventing it from making a tight seal and allowing some water to get through. Two, the lift chain, or lift wire may not be lowering the tank ball or flapper enough to properly seal off the tank. With both of these problems, the tank will keep trying to fill up with water, but it won’t ever reach the shut off level. Fixing this problem is simple. Repair or replace the problem part… the tank ball, flapper, lift chain, or lift rod.
