OWNERS: Deane and Jeffrey Pfeil

PfeilHrdwareDeane and Jeffrey Pfeil opened PFEIL HARDWARE on September 22, 2009 in historic downtown Troy, NY after more than a year of planning, researching and visiting lots of urban hardware stores. Having done two major redevelopment projects in Troy in the past six years, they were very aware of the need for a good, full-service hardware store downtown that would serve residents, businesses, contractors and students.

The Pfeils have conducted their commercial real estate and development business for more than 20 years. Both are retail-leasing specialists and have worked with retailers since the early 1980s. They have evolved into pioneering developers and entrepreneurs who have done a number of successful real estate projects, including loft condos, luxury apartments and office buildings. These endeavors have inspired downtown redevelopment and rejuvenation in both Saratoga Springs and Troy, NY.

Manager:       Steven Lesnewski

Steven Lesnewski, a seasoned, full-time retail professional manages the day-to-day running of the PFEIL HARDWARE. He brings 25 years of retail hardware experience, including merchandising, employee management, inventory control, equipment rentals and extensive paint knowledge.

The Building

Interior showing balconyThe 8,700 square foot store occupies the entire first floor and mezzanine of a magnificent beaux arts building constructed in 1903 as a department store. The well-known Stanleys Department Store, which opened in 1925, closed in 1989. The building remained vacant until the Pfeils purchased it in 2006. After re-naming the building The Conservatory and completing 19 luxury apartments on the upper 4 floors in 2008 and a parking garage in the basement, they turned their attention to restoring the retail space, saving as many of the original features as possible.

Interior Main AisleToday when people walk in to PFEIL HARDWARE, many are awed by the beauty of the store with its soaring 17-foot ceilings and support columns, its 160 linear feet of sunny display windows topped with frosted clerestory panes, its charming mezzanine with the original wrought iron railing capped with oak, its giant historic photos mounted above the paint department and its warm and welcoming colors.
